Camp Fortune - March 24, 2024

On the menu for today, are bluebird skies and a surprise return of winter weather, creating the perfect day on the slopes. After last weekend's milder weather, the mercury dropped back into a more typical wintery range, allowing for a great recovery on the slopes. The few bare spots from the previous weekend are gone, and a few dustings of natural snow helped give a small refresh to the otherwise bare glades and forests between the ski slopes. The amount of snow at Camp Fortune is quite impressive and the snow coverage on the trails is complete. The grooming and snowmaking teams know their stuff.  This weekend, Skyline, Meech and Valley were open. The only notable exception was the Clifford quad and related trails, which are in no way due to any lack of snow, but an electrical problem. WOW. The big difference from past weeks, the snow surface was perfectly groomed, firm base, and had very little ice. The puddles, streams and rivers near the bases of the chairlifts that seemed to s...

Camp Fortune - March 17, 2024

As the ski season is quickly coming to a close, Camp Fortune is well positioned and in excellent shape to continue to offer lift serviced skiing for a few more weeks. Today's visit comes after another round of mild weather and some overnight light rain/snow. Conditions were typical spring skiing on a groomed surface. Hegg was open ungroomed, but I have no problem admitting that I was not feeling adventurous for that classic steep! Saturday saw some brief power outages at Camp Fortune, which resulted in some electrical damage to the Clifford quad. As a result, those trails are now closed for the season. Despite that, what was open was definitely enough to satisfy all expectations. For the most part, it was a cloudy day, however the morning saw a brief period of sun and blueish skies come out. Here is the situation at the hill today... few people, no lines, everyone present having a good time... oh and the Meech side was open, which was definitely the highli...

Camp Fortune - March 8, 2024

This winter has been anything but ordinary. It started off promising with some decent snowfall, then a green Christmas, followed by some much needed snowstorms end of January/start of February. We are now nearly mid-March and the natural snow has been quite absent for many weeks. An unseasonably warm period has persisted for what seems like nearly a month's time. Looking at my own yard and that of the neighbors, the grass has been visible for quite some time, yet the skiing continues on the mountains. I arrived at 9am at Camp Fortune and as you would expect there was a noticeable lack of snow everywhere but on the ski trails, where the snow coverage was perfect, full width and with no bare or icy spots to mention. If this year taught anything, is that the machine made snow was not a nicety but a necessity.  A quick look while riding the Pineault Quad up the mountain and the contrast from areas covered with natural snow to those with machine made snow could not have been more black...

Sommet Edelweiss - January 21, 2024

What a beautiful day on the slopes. The weather was cold but perfectly reasonable, thanks to the bright sun and the bluebird skies (that always warms one's spirit). Today's visit was to Sommet Edelweiss. The mountain had all terrain from Chemin des Bois to Zoomer open, served by two quads, namely the Edelbahn Express and the Meister 4000, as well as the magic carpet. As one would expect, the great weather and snow conditions, was all that was needed to get people off their couches and come ski, and that is exactly what happened. Upon my arrival at 10 am, the parking was already quite full (rough guess about 75% filled), but the number of people on the slopes was quite moderate by comparison. Lift lines moved very quickly at the Meister, while at the Edelbahn they were generally a few minutes at most. A competition was taking place on the some of the slopes and that helped bring in more people. Conditions overall were fantastic, a nicely groomed base with a bit of loose s...

There really is a microclimate at the mountain. Exceptional conditions Three chairlifts and the magic carpet are in operation, some modules in the snow park await young and old acrobats alike and the main runs are open, beautiful, and fun to explore. With the return of colder weather, perfect for snowmaking, the new snow received and the one still to come according to the forecasts, it bodes well for what's to come! An evening of skiing in the midst of a heatwave: a remarkable technical feat at Sommet Saint-Sauveur

On May 30, 2023, skiers had the opportunity to ride one last time this season on the Côte 70 of Sommet Saint-Sauveur. As part of the annual congress of the Quebec Ski Area Association (ASSQ), a final evening in honor of skiing was organized at the mountain. All the elements were brought together to make this event a memorable moment for ski enthusiasts: the presence of key industry players, Olympic champions, and the most fervent customers; perfect weather and extremely pleasant skiing conditions. In other words, a truly unique evening. We had the pleasure of welcoming an impressive number of visitors for this evening celebrating the fantastic 2022-2023 season. The festive atmosphere was ensured by the presence of a DJ and a rock music band. Participants even had the opportunity to swim in the pool in front of the main lodge, combining the joys of skiing and swimming into a single experience. This evening perfectly highlighted the transition between winter and summer operations at the ...

Upcoming investments and new features at Les Sommets: 2023-2024 Season

We are pleased to inform you that the les Sommets group will be investing over $11 million in infrastructure improvements over the coming year. Here's a brief overview of the planned investments. Apollo, the new Sommet Olympia lift Our biggest investment is unquestionably the installation of Apollo, a brand-new 4-seater chairlift with loading carpet at Sommet Olympia. Preparations are already underway, as the new lift is scheduled to open at the start of the 2023-2024 ski season. It will replace the mountain's previous triple lift. Following the addition of the Laurentienne lift at Sommet Gabriel last year, the Apollo lift is the third new Doppelmayr-brand lift to be installed at les Sommets since 2019. Added to this is the ongoing upgrading of all our other lifts; the Soleil lift at Sommet Morin Heights, for example, was completely repainted last year. The Aiguille lift at Sommet Olympia and the Denis Forget lift on the north side of Sommet Gabriel are also getting a fresh coat of pai...

HISTORY - Edelweiss Valley - New Chairlifts and Trails - 2000-2015

Edelweiss was the creation of Andy Tommy, also known as one of the owners of the Tommy and Lefebvre ski and sports stores. The mountain was a racer's haven for many years. In the end of the 90s, Edelweiss went through tough financial times and was sold to Mont Saint-Sauveur International in the year 2000. Over the past 15 years, MSSI have invested money into all sorts of projects, to improve and update Edelweiss. From adding two additional quad chairlifts, high performance snowmaking and a snow tubing park, the mountain is constantly evolving. The following are photos showing the three double chairlifts that were in place in the early 2000s. The first is the Heron double chair, serving the lower beginner slope of Easy Street. This lift as well as the Yan double chair (located right next to the Edelbahn Express detachable quad) were removed and replaced with a quad chairlift called the Meister 4000. This new lift started at the same point as the old Heron lift, but finished at the summi...

HISTORY - Mont Saint-Sauveur - Nordique and Étoile chairlifts, Terrace and T-Bar 70 - 2008-2011

2003 is the year I first started skiing at Mont Saint-Sauveur, so the following images show some of the more notable and larger changes that have taken place on the mountain. First up is the replacement of the legendary Nordique triple chair. This chair was installed in 1976, the same year that Mont Saint-Sauveur started really developing, which includes the current chalet at the base of the mountain. The lift was replaced in the fall of 2008. The Nordique triple chairlift was built by Doppelmayr in 1976. It carries some legendary status due to it being the first and last lift to open each season, serving the 70 West and Nordique trails. This lift also operates in the summer to give access to two water slide attractions, with a mid-station located 1/3 of the way up the mountain.   The triple chair remained in operation after the ski season came to a close and served the water park for one last summer. During the first week of September, it was decommissioned.   Notice the dri...

Mont Ste Marie - January 4, 2024

Cold temperatures, a promise of sun and bluebird skies... all the ingredients were in place for the perfect day on the slopes. I woke up to a light dusting of snow that arrived overnight, which left a much-needed coat of white on the rooftops and the grass. I gathered my bags, tossed them in the back of the car and headed up to Mont Ste Marie. This mountain has something special about it. The highest vertical drop in the region at nearly double most others, high-speed lifts, rarely any lift lines, and great trails offering superb views of nearby Lac-Sainte-Marie.  Arriving shortly after 9:30 am, I headed to the chalet which is always nice and spacious. The view of the slopes courtesy of the large windows, really gets you in the mood, even before you start gearing up. As would be the case for nearly my entire visit, the chairlift welcomed me with no lineup each time. The value of all this is tremendous. Nowhere else do you get this much time on the slopes! Today, Mont Ste Marie has...

Camp Fortune - December 31, 2023

After what was arguably the worst Christmas and Holiday week for skiing in the region, which featured a perfect cocktail of warm mild weather and endless rain, the cold weather is back. Camp Fortune today had 6 trails open, which included Sparks, Marshall, Pineault and Allen's Alley. There were no lines at the lifts from opening until lunch and when combined with nearly perfect snow conditions, set everything up nicely for a great Sunday on the slopes.  Arriving shortly before 9am, I quickly proceeded into the chalet to get ready. I still can't get over the changes to the chalet, it feels so vast and features much more space and areas to rest, get ready or sit.  Before the recent expansion, there were essentially 2 entrances into the chalet. I can now count at least 5, and they are all extremely well-situated and provide direct access to many of the hotspots within. The exterior is still a work in progress but the new look is very refreshing. The blue paint is gone and a nice...

Camp Fortune - November 30, 2023

Opening day at Camp Fortune marked an exciting beginning for the winter season. With both Pineault and Allen's Alley trails available right from the start, the day saw a strong debut, a refreshing change from past instances when only Pineault was accessible. The snow coverage was exceptional, and the trails were open at their full width, impeccably groomed with a firm base and a layer of soft snow on top. Arriving just after noon proved advantageous, given that the mountain had opened at noon on this special day. Despite a decent turnout, facilitated by a school strike and remote work, the chairlift lines were surprisingly minimal. The initially cloudy sky gave way to sunshine and blue skies around 2 pm, adding to the overall delight of the day. Exploring the new phase of chalet expansion and renovations revealed exciting changes. Customer service, once situated between the main sections of the chalet, now occupies a dedicated area one level down, offering a more streamlined experience...

Mont Ste Marie - January 18, 2023

IMG_3713.thumb.jpg.2375b77acf67d3322c1101e899c71cff.jpg

It is mid-week, and wanting to enjoy the slopes with lots of vertical drop but without the lift lines, the choice was clear, a visit to Mont Ste Marie was in order. After checking the trail status online the night before, I woke up early and planned to be out the door at 7:45am. As luck would have it, I ended up leaving a bit later than planned but arrived at the mountain at 9:30am, just 30 minutes past opening. The expansive parking lot was fairly empty, enabling me to park very close to the chalet. A brief time later, my ski boots were on my feet and my skis and poles were in my hands. I headed over to get my lift ticket and proceeded to the Vanier Express detachable quad. As it would be for my first run, and how it would be for every one that followed, I...

Sommet Saint-Sauveur - April 18, 2022

What a perfect day on the slopes! The temperature was just right, and the sun was shining. Today I visited Sommet Saint-Sauveur, a ski mountain that holds a special place in my heart. There is just something magical about every visit, and this time was no different. With an early departure at 8am from Gatineau, I arrived at the mountain at 10am. The parking was already starting to fill, despite having only opened at 9am in the morning. Gearing up at the car, and strategically parking close to the Côte 71 chairlift, I started skiing shortly before 11am. I must confess, this is my first visit back to Sommet Saint-Sauveur in around 3 years. The arrival of our child and the pandemic put a temporary pause on my skiing. Having skied at Saint-Sauveur for many, many years (feeling like a second home every weekend), I had impatiently waited for quite some time to return and see what had changed... so that was what I quickly did before heading up for my first run. No doubt, the two biggest chang...

Sommet Edelweiss - March 2, 2022

What a fantastic day out on the slopes at Sommet Edelweiss. Horray! It is the Quebec March Break and the weather couldn't be more perfect. Bluebird skies and all slopes are open with full complete snow coverage. On this day, there were many U-12 competition teams from Quebec ski areas present at the mountain. They were doing some training and exercises at Edelweiss. This likely contributed to there being more people on the mountain than likely would have been otherwise, but with two of the three quad chairlifts running, the wait times were fairly short and reasonable. At the detachable Edelbahn Express, the wait varied from less than 1 minute to no more than 5 minutes. At the Meister 4000, it was always less than 1 minute. The Streif quad was not operating and seems to only run on the weekends when it is busiest. Conditions were fantastic, all trails were perfectly groomed. If you didn't know it had rained a week ago, you would have never known by skiing the slopes. Any effects from th...

Ski Vorlage - January 27, 2022

After last week's snowfall, and having a few days off from work, it was high time to make a return to the slopes. With the variety of trails offered, I made the choice of visiting Ski Vorlage, a mountain I always love visiting. All of the main trails are open, with the exception of Carnaval, Chien Chaud, La Chute and Headwall. The conditions at the moment are absolutely fantastic. Perfect snow coverage and a nice soft top layer of nicely groomed snow. We have definitely been fortunate with the natural snow this January, as well as the cold weather.  While the morning started off being fairly cold, I arrived at 11:30 am and took advantage of the Weekday 4Hr rate of $36 + tax. Vorlage now has RFID gates installed at the chairlifts, so once you have your lift ticket reloadable card, future visits can be paid (or reloaded) from their website and you can then head directly to the lifts to start your day. Of course, I had to show vaccine proof but once that is noted down on your account...
